Pte Repeat Sentence Tips

Important information regarding Repeat Sentence.

There are a few important factors that you need to know when it comes to the PTE speaking repeat sentence part. We’re going to take a look at the important concepts related to the exam and how you can make sure that you are ready when it comes time to take it. With this question type of the PTE exam, practice is going to be the most important aspect, because your only time to prepare is through that practice.

What is It?

Let’s start with what this section of the PTE is actually about. What you’re going to do is listen to a short recording of someone speaking a single sentence. That sentence could vary in length from approximately 8 words to 14 words or somewhere around 3 to 4 seconds.

The sentence will include things like punctuation and inflection as well as phrasing. It may also include words that you don’t know as well as including complicated words or long words. You’ll need to be prepared for the possibility that you won’t know everything that’s said.

In listening to the sentence you need to make sure that you listen to each word that is said and that you remember those words exactly in the same order that they are said. You are being tested on exactly that, your ability to repeat what you hear in exactly the same way that you heard it.

Preparing for the Practice Speaking Module

In the repeat sentence module of the exam you need to be ready as soon as you sit down. Unlike most of the sections of the PTE, there is no preparation time with this module.

All of this means that you need to be ready to go as soon as you sit down. If you don’t prepare properly and don’t practice the types of sentences that you may hear you’ll find yourself struggling when it comes time to start that first sentence. You may miss the beginning of the sentence or you may find yourself flustered or overwhelmed and miss something that happens in the middle.

PTE Practice

Also, make sure you prepare for each of the sentences that you will hear. There won’t be a lot of time between the end of your recording and the beginning of a new sentence. That means you need to finish speaking and immediately take a breath and get mentally prepared for the next sentence. There isn’t a lot of time for you to go through a ritual or process for preparing. A deep breath may be all that you have time for but it should be enough.

Keep This In Mind

  • There is no preparation time before the sentence starts or before your recording starts.
  • You will only get to hear the sentence one time. That means you need to be paying attention when it starts.
  • You are being tested on how well you can repeat the sentence exactly the way you heard it.
  • You will be given 10-12 repeat sentence questions to complete.
  • The sentences will get more difficult as you work your way through them, to determine your true fluency level.
  • This question type of the exam tests your speaking and listening ability and you will get points for both areas of your overall score.
