What is PTE Academic?

The Pearson Test of English (better known as PTE – Academic) is a testing system designed to measure the English language competency of non-native English speakers who intend to move to countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, the UK and so on, for higher education or residency.

The test looks at the abilities of candidates in four areas – speaking, writing, reading, and listening – to assess their overall English ability, although it is of course tailored for candidates who want to get a student visa or skilled visa in the above-mentioned countries.

PTE Scoring (Updated July 2025 Scoring)

PTE is graded on a scale of 0 to 90 for each of the four sections, which are known as subtests. The score ranges from 10 to 90—10 for the lowest possible score, and 90 for a perfect score.

However, recently Pearson, the company which administers the PTE, has made changes to their concordance report. As a result of this, the PTE scores required to equate with IELTS band scores have undergone some change.

Here’s a breakdown of PTE scores by skill, showing how Overall, Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing scores align with IELTS Academic band scores. This table is especially useful if you are translating a previous IELTS result into a PTE target or reviewing how each skill contributes to your overall performance.

If you are using PTE results for visa or immigration purposes, keep in mind that not all countries or visa pathways apply the latest concordance updates at the same time. Always check whether the current scoring benchmarks are recognized under the specific visa or points system you are applying for before relying on these equivalencies.

PTE Test Format & Score Distribution

PTE Academic test can only be a taken at an approved Pearson test centre. This is a computer-based test and involves mic and headphones for listening and speaking sections.

The test is a continuous 2-hour session, divided into 3 parts. There will be no breaks in between, unlike the previous 3-hour old format of the test.

You will be answering 22 different question types. Given below is the list of question types and the number of questions of each question type.

New PTE Question Types

New question type
Starting 7 August 2025, the Pearson PTE Academic exam introduces two new speaking task types: Respond to a Situation and Summarize a Group Discussion. With these additions, the Speaking section will now include 22 questions in total.

These new tasks place greater emphasis on real-world, spontaneous communication. In Respond to a Situation, test-takers must react appropriately to a practical scenario, demonstrating clarity, tone, and relevance. In Summarize a Group Discussion, candidates listen to multiple speakers and synthesize the key points into a clear, coherent response. Together, these changes reflect a stronger focus on functional speaking skills used in everyday and professional contexts.

PTE Integrated Scoring Guide

Most of the PTE question types have integrated scoring, which means a speaking-based question may also include marks for reading or listening. A good example is the Repeat Sentence task in the speaking section, where PTE candidates not only earn marks in speaking but also in listening.

Below are two charts that provide a complete breakdown of how each question type contributes scores towards different sections. One of the two PTE scoring chart is based on the contribution of each question type to its respective section, allowing candidates to focus more on specific areas. The second PTE chart arranges the questions based on their maximum contribution in descending order.
