Can I Change IELTS Academic to General After Booking?

If you selected IELTS Academic instead of General Training—or General Training instead of Academic—contact the test centre where you booked as soon as possible. A module change may be possible, but the deadline, availability, fee and procedure are local rules.

First, identify exactly what you booked

“Academic or General” is only one part of the booking. Read the confirmation email, receipt or test-taker portal and copy the exact wording before contacting the centre.

Which IELTS test should you take?

Your receiving organisation decides which test it accepts. The table below is a starting point, not a substitute for checking the current requirement.

The official General Training description confirms that Listening and Speaking are the same in Academic and General Training, while Reading and Writing differ. That is why changing the module matters even though two sections are shared.

What to do after booking the wrong IELTS module

Stop preparing for the wrong version. Keep your receipt and confirmation email, but do not buy version-specific materials until the booking is confirmed.
Find the booking provider. Check whether the booking was made through British Council, IDP or another authorised centre. The organisation that holds the booking controls the change.
Contact the centre immediately. Use the phone number, email address or webform shown in your confirmation. Include your candidate name, booking reference, test date, current module and requested module.
Ask four specific questions. Can the module be changed? Is the requested module available on the same date? What fee or price difference applies? Will the change require a new date?
Get written confirmation. Ask for an updated confirmation email or portal record before treating the issue as solved.
Check the receiving organisation again. If the centre offers another option, confirm that the replacement test is accepted for your university, visa, employer or professional registration.

British Council vs IDP: who handles the change?

There is no single global module-change form. The provider or authorised test centre that issued your confirmation controls the booking, and the available process can differ by country.

Deadlines, fees and availability: what is actually universal?

Very little is universal. The official global IELTS page says detailed terms depend on the test centre and location. Some regions allow one free change, while other centres may require a fee, a new date or rebooking. Availability of the requested module can also determine whether a same-date switch is possible.

For example, current IELTS Australia guidance says a module change must be requested through the test centre and may be possible up to 48 hours before the test, while IDP Australia guidance describes one free change before the original test date. These are regional examples—not a promise for every country.

Do not rely on an old downloadable form unless your centre instructs you to use it. The process may now be handled through a portal, email or centre-specific webform.

If your IELTS test is within a few days

Call the test centre immediately and follow up by email. State that the test module is incorrect and ask for the fastest available correction route. If the centre cannot change the module, ask whether a transfer, cancellation and rebooking or replacement session is available.

Do not attend the wrong module hoping the centre will convert the result afterwards. Academic and General Training Reading and Writing are different tests, and a university or immigration authority may reject the wrong version.

Keep every confirmation, payment receipt and reply. If the centre gives verbal advice, ask them to confirm the outcome in writing.

What if you already took the wrong IELTS test?

A completed Academic result is not automatically converted into a General Training result, and vice versa. The receiving organisation decides whether your result is acceptable. Contact the university, visa authority, employer or regulator with the exact test name on your Test Report Form before relying on it.

If the wrong module is not accepted, ask the test centre about booking the correct module. Keep the old result for your records, but do not assume it can be substituted because Listening and Speaking are shared between the two versions.

Can you change IELTS computer to paper?

Changing the delivery format is separate from changing Academic to General Training. Ask the booking centre whether computer or paper is available for your exact date and whether a format change uses the same transfer rules. Do not assume that a format change also changes the module, UKVI status or test acceptance.

Regular IELTS versus IELTS for UKVI

A high score in regular IELTS does not automatically satisfy a UK visa route that requires IELTS for UKVI. Check the visa route and the exact test named by the receiving authority before rebooking.

IELTS Academic versus IELTS Academic for UKVI

These may look similar, but the approved test type matters. Ask your university or visa adviser whether the UKVI version is required.

IELTS Online

IELTS Online is not a universal substitute for a test-centre result. Official IELTS Online guidance currently says it is available only for Academic in some markets and is not currently accepted for immigration purposes.

Life Skills

Life Skills is a separate test for specific UK routes. If your requirement says four-skill Academic or General Training, do not book Life Skills.
