Food Speaking Part 2 – Cue Card 1

Talk about an enjoyable dinner you had with your friends. Please say

You should say:

  • who did you have dinner with
  • when did it happen
  • what did you find enjoyable about it
  • and what kind of food did you eat and where
  1. Who did you have dinner with?
I am going to talk about a dinner I had with a good group of friends. I went out for a meal with Jenna, Kelly, Marc and Mike. They are good friends I made in college. Jenna and Marc studied the same course as me, and Kelly and Mike were my roommates. Even though we finished college a while ago, we have remained excellent friends since.
  2. When did it happen?
It was a couple of months ago, and it was a very special dinner because it was Jenna’s thirtieth birthday. We had booked a table at Jenna’s favourite restaurant and we made sure to get there earlier to decorate it and bring in presents. Before the dinner, I spent the day with Jenna and told her that I would treat her to dinner at her favourite place. When she got there, we were all there to greet her!
  3. What did you find enjoyable about it?
I think my favourite part was seeing Jenna’s reaction to the party. She did not expect it at all, and she seemed so surprised and happy to see everyone. I could tell she really loved it. The party was a hoot. It was so nice to not only surprise Jenna, but also work on it with my friends. I think that the build-up made the outcome even better.
  4. And what kind of food did you eat and where?
The food was, as always, exquisite! We went to a Greek restaurant, and I had a big green salad with feta cheese, tomatoes and black olives. Because it was her birthday, we naturally all had some cake! Mike baked her favourite cake, which is a chocolate fudge cake. She thoroughly enjoyed it and we were ecstatic that she had such a blast.

Cue Card 3

Describe an occasion when you tried a new food for the first time. Please say

You should say:

  • when was it
  • where was it
  • what was the food
  • and did you like it or not

I am going to talk about a time when I tried a new food for the first time. A few years ago, I went on a trip to London with my boyfriend for a long weekend. We had been shopping and exploring the sights, visiting museums and wandering around. We decided to have some lunch in the asian district of the city. Neither of us had tried sushi before so we decided to give it a go. We went into a small sushi restaurant which had a rotating belt in the centre which was serving the food. We were quite bewildered about how it all worked; you had to help yourself to a plate which had different colours and prices which you would be charged for at the end of the meal.

So we started to dig into lots of different dishes. At first, I found the texture very strange as I had never tried raw fish before. But it had a really unique taste and was delicious when you added sauce and ginger. We were given some wasabi paste and it nearly blew our head off when we tried a tiny bit. Wasabi is really spicy and I think it is something you have to build up over time. I liked using chopsticks to eat the sushi and the whole experience was really fun and different.

After that, we were hooked on sushi and now I know several places in my city where you can get good sushi. I can even tolerate the wasabi now I have got used to it.

Cue Card 4

Talk about a time you invited your relatives to a restaurant for a meal. Please say

You should say:

  • when and where did you meet
  • who did you invite
  • what did you eat
  • and explain how you felt about eating out with your relatives.

I am going to talk about my parent’s wedding anniversary. Last month, my parents celebrated their wedding anniversary and my siblings and I organised a surprise meal with all the family. We met at a traditional Pakistani restaurant half an hour before my parents arrived and decorated the table with balloons and ribbons. They were expected just to meet the immediate family for a casual meal but there were about 20 of us so it became a proper party. The look on my parent’s faces was so funny; they were completely flabbergasted. Then my mother burst into tears!

We had invited all our aunts, uncles and cousins who live in the UK along with my brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces.

We ate a traditional Pakistani meal with meats, curries and rice dishes. We had ordered a celebration cake which came out at the end of the meal with candles for my parents to blow out. By the time we had had all the courses and dessert we were stuffed.

I love eating out with my family, especially for a celebration meal as we share all the dishes and nobody has the responsibility of cooking all day. There was a lot of laughter and loud conversation which I enjoyed and everyone had a brilliant time. We were all exhausted afterwards and had to go home for a rest.

Vocabulary for Cue Card 4

  • siblings – brothers and sisters
  • burst into tears – to cry suddenly
