Favorite Speaking Part 2 – Cue Card 1

Talk about your favourite toy as a child. Please say

You should say:

  • what the toy was
  • who gave it to you
  • how often you played with it
  • and explain why this toy was your favourite.

I am going to talk about my favourite toy as a child. The toy I remember best, is a bear called Toby. I was given the bear as a christmas present from my parents when I was about 7 years old. It was an expensive gift and I knew that it was something very special when I opened the box. It was no ordinary teddy. You could open a compartment and put tapes into the bear and then he would sing and talk. At the same time, his eyes would flutter. When I was 7, I thought this was incredible. It was like magic. The teddy came with a series of books and they followed the adventures of the bear and his friends. I can still remember some of the stories and sounds – the music was quite catchy. I would play with Toby all the time, especially at bedtime when he could sing a lullaby or read you a story. It helped me drift off to sleep and he had a place on my bed for many years. He was my favourite toy because I loved reading and the bear was like a friend. As I grew older, I spent less time playing with the bear. However, I still have him in the loft in a box somewhere. I have heard that they are quite collectible toys now as they were very hi-tech back in the day. Nowadays, the tapes don’t work very well and the movement is very slow. I should probably have him repaired so that I can pass him on to my own children one day

Talk about an ambition you have, but haven’t fulfilled yet. Please say

You should say:

  • what the ambition is
  • how long you have had it
  • why you have this ambition
  • and explain how you feel about this ambition.

I am going to talk about an ambition I have had for a long time; learning to play the guitar. I have wanted to be able to play an instrument since I was a child. I got the opportunity to learn the recorder and violin at school but I didn’t really take to it. Now I regret not trying harder to learn to play music. A few years ago I was at a friend’s wedding and there was a singer and guitarist. They played some amazing ballads and acoustic songs and I really envied the player’s skill. Coincidently, I saw an ad online the following week; someone advertising guitar lessons. So, I took the bull by the horns and called the number but the line was engaged. The crazy thing is that I never tried again, life continued and I forgot all about the teacher. I suppose it takes a lot of determination and effort to learn and part of me had trepidation about this as I am quite a busy person. Every now and then, I think about how it would feel to be able to play the guitar. I feel disappointed in myself that I didn’t try harder and I would like to find the drive and commitment to learn in the future. I occasionally pick up a friend´s guitar and imagine that I could play it. I really admire people who can get up on stage and sing or perform, it must take real guts.

Talk about your favourite movie. Please say

You should say:

  • what movie is it
  • what is it about
  • when you watched it for the first time
  • and explain why you like it.

The movie I am going to talk about is Forrest Gump, a brilliant film. It is about 20 years old now but I really think it is a timeless classic for all the family. It is the story of a man called Forrest Gump who is born with a disability in his legs and possibly a form of autism. He has a difficult childhood as he is bullied at school but forms a special bond with a girl called Jenny. The plot follows Forrest through his career in the army and there are lots of funny moments where he meets different people and also ends up helping them. Forest tracks down Jenny as an adult and in the end they fall in love and get married and have a son. Sadly, Jenny dies and Forrest brings up their son. I first watched it growing up and thought it was hilarious and really unique. I have watched it about 20 times since then and I still laugh just as much as I did the first time. Some of the catchphrases have become famous like ´Run, Forrest, Run!´ I love it not only for the humour but also because Forrest´s character is kind and endearing and he improves the lives of a lot of people because he has a heart of gold. I don´t know anyone who didn’t enjoy it, to be honest. An excellent movie.

Cue Card 4

Talk about your favourite movie. Please say

You should say:

  • what is it about
  • how did you find it
  • why do you like this website

I am going to talk about YouTube. YouTube is a website where you can watch videos about anything and everything or you can create content and upload the videos for other people to watch. I started using the website about 10 years ago when I started learning English and the site was recommended to me by a friend. You can watch free English classes and series that help you to learn vocabulary. I also use the site to watch music videos and listen to music playlists. Although they are free to watch, you have to put up with lots of adverts interrupting your videos. That is how YouTube is funded, the more people that watch a video and have to view the advert, the more money the video makes.

On a day to day basis, the website is really useful if you don’t know how to do something or you are stuck on a problem in your home. You can search ‘how to change a lightbulb’ for example and someone will have posted a video about how to do it. There are lots of free courses available so it has a lot of educational value as well as entertaining videos.

The downside is that the videos can become a little addictive. It is easy to watch a few minutes of one thing, then click to the next and watch another and before you know it, hours have passed. So it can waste time and get you hooked on it. I like how useful it is though and I can’t imagine what we all did when we had a problem before we could look on YouTube.

Vocabulary for Cue Card 4

  • to put up with – to tolerate
  • stuck on – not progressing
  • hooked on – addicted
