Table of Contents
1. Types of Conditional Sentences for IELTS
Conditionals can be used in both the speaking and writing sections to express facts, possibilities, regrets or hypothetical situations.
Remember that the if-clause in the sentence structure can be switched around as well.
You can say:
If-clause, + main clause
or
main clause + if-clause
For example:
If the government invests more money in public transport, the traffic congestion won’t be as bad.
or…
The traffic congestion won’t be as bad if the government invests more in public transport.
Conditional Type | Structure | Usage | Example |
---|---|---|---|
Zero Conditional | If + present simple, + present simple | Used to state facts, often with adverbs of frequency | If I have free time, I usually go for a walk in the park. |
First Conditional | If + present simple, + will | Expresses possible future events and consequences | If we don’t take action now, global warming will only get worse. |
Second Conditional | If + past simple, + would | Used for unlikely or imaginary possibilities | If the government prioritized affordable tertiary education, more people would go to university. |
Third Conditional | If + past perfect, + would have | Used for hypothetical past situations that didn’t happen | If the government had implemented stricter environmental regulations earlier, we would have reduced the impact of pollution by now. |
Summary Notes:
1.1. Zero Conditional: Can use “when” instead of “if” to indicate frequency.
1.2. First Conditional: Useful for arguing points and demonstrating consequences.
1.3. Second Conditional: Often used for speculative or hypothetical scenarios.
1.4. Third Conditional: Reflects on past events that did not occur but could have changed the outcome.
